Kavien’s Study Trip to Oslo

Introduction

This page is about Kavien’s study trip to Oslo, November 25-28, 2016. He visited the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, dedicated to the Nobel Peace Prize and the ideals it represents. The center hosted “The New World Embassy: Rojava”. Clearly, the ideal of the Peace Center resonated with Kavien’s ideals: “through the ideas and work of the Nobel Peace Prize laureates, we wish to inspire a better, more peaceful, world” (from the Center’s website).

Photos and background information

The photo shows the dome inside the main hall of the Nobel Peace Center. This is a an “Embassy”, operating for two consecutive days, bringing representatives from Rojava together with international politicians, diplomats, academics, journalists, students, artists, and more. Through open deliberation and public discussion the New World Embassy: Rojava proposes a platform to build new transnational relationships and explore alternative models of people’s diplomacy. For more info, see the document Description of the New World Embassy Rojava by Studio Jonas Staal.

The Embassy consists of a dome, a large-scale oval shaped architectural structure, designed as an “ideological planetarium.” The above photo shows the venue inside the dome. It was part of the Oslo Architecture Triennale 2016. It represents, through cultural means, the ideals of “stateless democracy” developed by the communities of the autonomous region of Rojava, northern-Syria.
